Bill & Judy Heim

(Red Oak Pottery)

Surrounded by nature on their 67 acre farm in Tennessee, Bill and Judy Heim enjoy the freedom of expression, yet control and concentration required for their creative process.

Bill and Judy each have over 13 years experience with clay. Their scenic farm in Wilson county provides inspiration for their functional, high fired stoneware. The influence of nature is seen in the designs which often use local cane or a leaf motif, and the glazes which use ash from their wood burning stove.

Red Oak pottery is wheel-thrown and hand trimmed by both artists. While the clay is leather hard, some surfaces are carved or slip covered. Each piece is then fired in an electric kiln to 1816F (cone 06). Glazes are then applied, and the pots are fired to 2345F (cone 10) in a propane fueled kiln, a process taking about 10 hours. These stoneware pots are food and dishwasher safe.

Whether it is Judy's carved leaf and horse shapes or Bill's Tennessee cane decorating vases and serving as handles on lids, the artists enjoy sharing with others the beauty around them that is a part of their everyday life.
