Lorraine Burrows has been an artist working in fiber and paper for more than 30 years. While living in North Carolina in the 70’s she earned her Art degree in textile arts.

For the next few years, Lorraine sold her weavings at craft fairs and galleries throughout the South. Her two young children traveled the craft circuit with her, assisting with set-up and sales – they both mastered mathematics as they learned to tally the day’s receipts, which generally determined what we could afford for supper, and improved their reading while pouring over travel brochures to find out what kids could enjoy in the places we visited.

Many years later, her children grown with children of their own, Lorraine discovered bookbinding. It incorporates all she loved about weaving – working with colors and textures to produce functional objects that bring joy to people.

The wooden books are a collaborative effort with her husband, Richard, an unreformed hippie who started working with wood in the 60’s. He makes the covers, which include carved, burnt and painted wood, as well as beautiful exotic woods and domestic hardwoods, enhanced with clear lacquer finishes. She transforms them into finely crafted books that are not only lovely to look at but wonderful to touch.

Lorraine Burrows also makes unique and colorful books using her own painted paste papers and photographs. Most books offer blank pages for her buyers or their recipients to create their own journals, albums, guest books or whatever else comes to mind,
